Platelet Rich Plasma for Hair

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) stimulates growth of hair follicles, improvement in hair texture and thickness, and new hair growth. It can rejuvenate thinning hair for both men and women.

All injectable procedures are subject to a non-obligation face to face consultation

Your appointments

Consultation: We will start with a detailed consultation to ensure this treatment is right for you and to talk through the expected results. If you decide to proceed with the treatment, a cooling off period is always offered.

Treatment: Appointments last 60mins and may require a little more down time. Three treatments each one month apart are recommended for optimal results, with a review and a ‘top-up’ treatment after three months and then six months, followed by a further top up treatment every 6 months for maintenance.

How does it work?

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) uses your body’s own ability to regenerate using the growth factors that are stored in your platelets. Using a centrifuge and a small sample of your blood, the platelets are separated from the rest of the blood for injection. Stem cells will be included in the sample, but more importantly the growth factors in your PRP will attract stem cells from the surrounding tissue. PRP therapy delivers growth factors at high concentrations to the treatment areas, resulting in hair follicle stimulation and improvements in hair texture, thickness and new hair growth.

PRP specific growth factors or proteins that include hair growth include:

  • Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) - promotes blood vessel growth, cell replication and skin formation

  • Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) - promotes blood vessel formation

  • Epidermal growth factor (EGF) - promotes cell growth and differentiation, blood vessel formation and collagen formation

  • Fibroblast growth factor (FGF) - 2 (FGF-2) - promotes growth of specialised cells and blood vessel formation

What are the benefits?

The PRP stimulates natural hair growth and helps to maintain it by increasing blood supply to the area. This stimulation helps to increase hair diameter and thickness, and increasing the number of hairs giving hair a thicker, fuller look. PRP can also be used after a hair implant, as it stimulates the inactive implanted follicles into an active growth phase.

PRP can be used to treat both male and female pattern baldness and alopecia.

The improved hair thickness, texture and new hair growth can improve confidence and transform your look!

When will I start to see the results?

Since PRP stimulates a biological effect, results should not be expected immediately. Although some results will be noticed two weeks after the first treatment, it can take three to six months after your first treatment to see measurable results.

How long do results last?

Results can be visible after a single treatment, and the treatment can offer long-lasting results with minimal side effects. Optimum results are achieved over a course of three treatments, one month apart with a review and a ‘top-up’ treatment after three months and then six months, followed by a further top up treatment every six months to maintain the results.

Does it hurt?

To ensure your comfort, we do apply a topical anaesthetic cream to numb the skin prior to treatment.  A very fine needle is used and this treatment is well tolerated by patients.

What do I need to do before my appointment?

We may prescribe a course of supplements for you to take before your first treatment and continuing throughout the course of treatment.

Ensure you attend your appointment well hydrated.

We recommend that you do not drink alcohol the night before your treatment and caffeine on the day of your treatment as it can increase your risk of bruising.

It is important you tell us about any medicines or dietary supplements during your consultation as some medicines can adversely affect the way the treatment works or increase your risk of bruising. We would advise against consistent use of NSAIDs (such a ibuprofen) for 48 hours prior to the procedure.

Treatment cannot be administered if there is an active skin infection or if you are unwell- including colds, coughs, sore throats etc. Do contact the clinic to discuss any illness or new medicines prior to attending.

Be aware of the necessary after care advice and that your schedule allows for you to follow it.

What do I need to do after the treatment?

Immediately after treatment you may notice raised blebs or bumps at the injection sites across the target area (across your scalp). For this reason, the treatment is considered to warrant some ‘down time’ and you may choose to go straight home after the procedure. These bumps will improve and most find they have gone by the following day, however it is possible they may still be visible for a few days afterwards.

You are advised to avoid alcohol, exercise and extremes in temperature for 48 hours after the treatment.

Do not touch/wash your hair for 12 hours. Do not use hair dyes for two weeks following treatment.

Only use the recommended products until the skin returns to its normal colour and the blebs have dissipated, then usual haircare may be resumed.

Is it safe?

PRP treatment is autologous (meaning that the PRP is derived from the patient’s own blood), minimising safety concerns for allergic response or disease transmission.
